Market Day

Wednesday is farmers' market day at UN Plaza, just down the street from my office. I love to mosey down there at lunchtime to see what looks good enough to lug home.

As you can see I hit the jackpot today - huge bunches of dill, basil, and mint, plus some lovely tomatoes, green beans, and a right nice cabbage.

Umm-um! I'll be eatin' fine for the next few days!

We were in Austin, Texas recently and saw a great group...Rotel and the Hot Tomatoes. This made me think of them. They have a web site if anyone's interested

And please, cousin Billy, tell cousin Mary about that moose head!

As far as sad songs go, mine would have to be the theme from "Gone with the Wind." Ann practiced that damn thing on the piano for two years running. Never did play it through.

Love,
ME

Yum...really fresh veggies can't be beat! We belong to a CSA farm and get our food every Friday. I love cooking with all the fresh herbs!

Cuz - I cannot find Rotel up here! I used it a lot down South - all the variations. Great name for a band, I must say. (Austin's a great town.) How was Montana, by the way?

"Gone with the Wind" because your plantation is in disarray or because you had to listen to Ann practice it on the piano for so many years?

em - sauteed a good variety of those fresh herbs (plus olive oil and garlic) and tossed 'em with my pasta tonight. Fresh do make a difference!

Mmmmm mmmmmm. Love the farmers market. Just curious, how's Bailey?

Bailey's fine. We don't walk as much or as far when the weather's hot and humid - we usually leave it for early morning and evening. She'll be 14 in November, so she's slowing down a bit.

What a great picture, Mary - it looks like a professional job from the Healthy Lifestyle Marketing Board!

I'm going to have to re-read your post at dinner time tomorrow and get inspired to make myself something yummy!

Jo - what inspired me (besides the smell of basil at the market) was an article in the New York Times the other day called "Summer Express: 101 Simple Meals Ready in 10 Minutes or Less." Some are healthy; some are not. But the healthy ones definitely make use of the fresh stuff!

(Are you staying dry????)

I see we're going to have to call a family council meeting about the moosehead. How about the Sunday (or whenever the family party is) before Christmas? Your place, cuz, right? ;-)

Mmmm, I can smell the scent rising up from those warm berds - now that is an interesting mistype! - herbs!

How wonderful to have a farmers' market in the centre of New York!

We smoked lots of stuff upstairs, thank you. But there was a moose head in the closet of the bedroom to the left at the top of the stairs.

A pink elephant too.

Cuz.

Liz - yes, there are a couple (maybe more that I don't know about) of great markets for farm-folk who come down from beyond NYC to sell their goods. Besides the Wednesday market at the UN, there's an even bigger one in Union Square on the weekend. Lovely cheeses and breads and plants, as well.

Wait, wait, wait, Cuz! Forget the moosehead and pink elephant - Do you mean to tell me you guys were smokin' stuff upstairs? Where was I?

Definitely check out the Union Square farmer's market (Wed & Sat are the best days)... I work around the corner and always go there... Ask Lisa about me and my Winesap apples!!!... I've gotten so many people hooked on them over the years.
