George Carlin's "Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV" is one of the classics of American comedy. The New York Times has a good article today on Carlin and his refusal to rest on his comedic laurels - something fresh and relevant all the time with this guy.So what are your seven deadly words - for television or otherwise? Here's a list of words and phrases (only 7 - don't think I don't have a whole pocketful of 'em) that I would like to see banned from the earth as we know it:
- Paradigm - Who doesn't want to see this one sink into a bottomless bog?
- Spin and/or spin-doctor - Spinning used to be such a noble profession. It's a shame the politicians threw shit all over the word.
- Baby Boomer - No, no, no! I'm sick of it! "Very cool and smart people" is a much better phrase. ;-)
- Basically - Basically, I hate that it's basically stuck into everything, basically.
- Sucks - Just unpleasant. Find a more creative way to say you hate something.
- Synergy - 1980's flashback.
- Proactive - Because so much of what we do is Conactive . . .
Not exactly in the same class with yours, but one of the things I am sick of is athletes on TV constantly saying "you know", "I mean", "I mean you know", "knowwhaddamean". Take away those phrases and they could not talk, which might be a blessing since they never have anything to say anyway. They're being paid big money to play, not talk...good thing...
